Essentail Oils for Healthy & Smooth Skin
We are living in a society where the toxic load on our bodies are at the highest levels they have ever been. This increased toxic load causes our skin to age quicker than it ordinarily would. So here are my Go-To essential oils for aging skin that help slow down the ageing process.
Frankincense:
Frankincense essential oil helps protect skin cells as it is a powerful astringent.It can be used to help reduce the appearance of large pores, acne, prevent wrinkles, blemishes, and it even helps tighten and lift skin to naturally slow signs of aging. The oil can be used anywhere where the skin becomes saggy (like under the eyes). Try mixing together 4 drops of Frankincense oil with 2 tablespoons of a carrier oil (such as Jojoba or Rosehip oil) and apply directly to the skin. Frankincense can also help to strengthen the skin, improving its elasticity and defence mechanisms against blemishes. Frankincense oil may decrease the appearance of scars and can help with wound healing. It may also help reduce the appearance of dark spots caused from stretch marks, acne blemishes, eczema and help with healing of surgical wounds. Mix two to three drops of oil with an unscented base oil or lotion and apply directly to skin. Frankincense is fine to apply to skin that is in the process of healing however be careful not to apply it to broken skin. It is one of my favourite essential oils for skin.
Lavender:
Lavie is so smoothing and it specifically targeted skin repair, including the cellular communication with your skin. Lavender essential oil helps support your body to produce three of your bodies most powerful antioxidants - glutathione, catalase and superoxide dismutase. These antioxidants help to reduce the toxic load and free radical image which can lead to ageing your skin. A 2013 study published in Phytomedicine found that Lavender oil increased the activity of the above antioxidants -glutathione, catalase and SOD. And more recent studies have indicated similar results, concluding that lavender has antioxidant activity and helps to prevent or reverse oxidative stress. A must have essential oil for aging skin.
Blue Tansy:
When Vogue refers to Blue Tansy as the "anti-anxiety" for your skin, you're probably going to follow their advice and buy Blue Tansy right?! Blue tansy essential oil skin benefits cover a wide variety of skin problems such as sunburn, in amed and damaged skin, bruising, dermatitis, and dry, itchy skin. It has many different properties which can really improve the texture of your skin and its complexion:
- It has anti-allergenic properties, which will help to reduce your skin's reaction to allergens which cause rashes (i.e. if you suffer from redness). I just add a drop to some Fractionated Coconut Oil when my skin is angry and in amed and then apply it to the area of concern. It relives the itchiness and redness straight away.
- It has anti-microbial properties, which can help if you are a "picker", aka me. I can't control myself (I know, it's so bad) and I often pick my skin and I most definitely can't leave a pimple sitting there without having a crack it popping it. Blue Tansy can help to stop the growth of bacteria, and alleviate the pain. Even though the above properties address what seem to be 'short term' skin issues, we all know that anxiety can have long term effects, right? It can contribute to weight gain, gut problems and long-term mental health issues. The same goes for your skin - addressing those short term problems will benefit you in the long run.
Because Geranium oil is an astringent, it reduces contractions in several parts of the body (aka, it reduces wrinkles). Geranium oil is an effective anti-in ammatory. In fact, a 2013 study found that Geranium oil is a safer and more effective ingredient for anti-in amamort medication. The data supports that Geranium oil reduces in ammation in the body, and there are fewer side effects from this essential oil than cholesterol and joint pain medications. It also helps to:
- lighten age spots and even out overall skin tone;
- improve circulation under the skin’s surface which aids in cell regeneration, making it useful for fading scars, wrinkles, and other visible imperfections in the skin. I think if you ask anyone about Essential Oils for skin, Geranium & Frankincense Essential Oils would be the first that comes to mind. I can’t live without mine and I am absolutely loving the results!
